BBC Magazines- BBC magazines are owned by the BBC. They publish many magazines, these include: BBC Easy Cook, BBC Gardeners' World, BBC Good Food, BBC History Magazine, BBC Home Cooking Series, BBC Top Gear Magazine, Radio Times and more. The BBC are mostly known for their television channel, this proves that the BBC has few different media platforms. With the BBC being one of the most watched TV channels in the UK, this status will encourage audiences to buy their magazines. The BBC are also connected via social media. Having various different specific Twitter and Facebook accounts. This allows the organisation to get out to a wider demographic and raises the profile of the brand. The fact the BBC has very subjective magazines allows the readers to get a magazine that suits them the best.  The difference the BBC have, compared to the other two organisations is that the BBC demographic is even wider that the other two. The BBC have a much more appealing content for children, with the inclusion of CBBC magazines and CBeebies magazines. Having these two magazines allows children to get involved with reading and it bumps up the selling’s that the BBC make. There isn’t just one CBBC and one Cbeebies magazine, there are many specific magazines based on the programmes, so if a child likes one specific programme, they can buy the resulting magazine.


TimeInc. Over 60 iconic media brands that captivate and inspire millions of people every day across print, online, mobile, tablets and experiences. TimeInc are one the biggest publishers in the UK. They publish many different magazines, for example: World Soccer, What’s on TV, Shooting UK, The Field, InStyle and many more. They represent over 30% of the magazine market, & have a proven record of outperforming in our sector. They also work with some of the most recognised household brands such as What’s on TV, Marie Claire and The Beano.  Growing magazine sales is our business. In 2007, TimeInc. magazine What’s on TV was the bestselling magazine of the year. Selling 1,421,645 copies, and the 9th bestselling magazine was Chat, which is also published my TimeInc. Chat sold 499,626 copies that year. TimeInc (like various magazine publishers nowadays) have various links with multi-media platforms, for example, social networking. TimeInc has Twitter and Facebook accounts to expand its brand to a wider audience and to show everyone what they’re brand is all about. This benefits the brand massively and that’s why all brands do this now. As social media has increased in popularity, the more brands advertise themselves on the websites. Due to the various number of magazines TimeInc publish, they will make high amounts of money. The majority of the magazines that TimeInc do publish, will most probably be brought out every week. Maybe some of the less popular ones will be every month but the majority brought out will be weekly.  All of these different types of magazines mean that the demographic of TimeInc magazine readers will be huge.  The main target audience for this publisher will be for an older audience.




Bauer- Similarly to TimeInc, Bauer are one of the biggest publishers in the world. With TimeInc, they share around 50% of the magazine market. They publish many magazines, with categories including Women’s Weeklies, Women’s Interest, TV Listings, Food, Puzzles and Special Interest.   TimeInc (like various magazine publishers nowadays) have various links with multi-media platforms, for example, social networking. TimeInc has Twitter and Facebook accounts to expand its brand to a wider audience and to show everyone what they’re brand is all about. This benefits the brand massively and that’s why all brands do this now. As social media has increased in popularity, the more brands advertise themselves on the websites. Due to the various number of magazines TimeInc publish, they will make high amounts of money. The majority of the magazines that TimeInc do publish, will most probably be brought out every week. Magazine Industry Analysis
Whether you sell a core range of bestsellers or an extended range with specialist titles, magazines drive both footfall and profit in stores. The top 5 magazines of 2015 were the following:
-          TV Choice: This was the most successful magazine with 1,276,045 copies sold in 2015, but it’s gone down by 2.1% from last year. The category of this magazine is TV Listings.

-          What’s on TV: The second most successful magazine in 2015 was ‘What’s on TV’. This magazine sold 1,010,798 copies in 2015, but went down 2.2% from last year. The category for this magazine is also TV Listings.

-          Take a Break: The third most successful magazine in 2015 was ‘Take a Break’. This magazine sold 602,674, which is a lot less than second placed ‘What’s on TV’. It’s gone down 7.4% from last year. The magazine’s category goes under Women’s and Weeklies.


-          Slimming World: The fourth my successful magazine in 2015 was ‘Slimming World’. This magazine sold 496,308 copies throughout the year. And the percentage compared to last year has risen by 15.0%. The magazines goes under the category of Health & Parenting.

-          Radio Times: And lastly, the fifth most successful magazine in 2015 was ‘Radio Times’. This magazine has sold 454,330 copies over the course of the year but has decreased by 11.5% from last year. The category this magazine goes under is TV Listings.

Today many music fans are aware on the Internet for fast news about the latest in pop music. However, music magazines still play an important role with outstanding writing and analysis. This is a list of 3 of the best for the committed pop music fan.
1.  Q
Q modestly calls itself "The World's Greatest Music Magazine," and it is difficult to argue. Although it is based in the UK, there is plenty of information in Q to keep an American pop fan coming back for more. Each monthly issue is a mini-book stuffed with loads of reviews of albums and music-related movies, DVDs, and books as well as current download lists, great interviews, coverage of key events in pop music history and writing that revels in an edgy sense of humour.
2.  Rolling Stone
Rolling Stone is the granddaddy of US rock music magazines, and it is still well worth reading. There have been moments when it appeared that Rolling Stone was dipping a bit too far into the fashion world, but some of the best pop music writers still work for the magazine. Also, don't miss some outstanding writing on political and societal issues. A 5-star review in Rolling Stone still carries much weight in the music world.

3.  Entertainment Weekly

Entertainment Weekly has only been in existence since 1990 and is therefore still a relative newcomer to the world of popular music reporting. However, although its broad focus includes film, TV, books, and video as well as music, the access EW writers and reviewers receive (the magazine's parent company is entertainment behemoth Time Warner) makes their insight worth reading. Also, outside of music industry bible Billboard, Entertainment Weekly is the only US publication bringing you music news in paper form on a weekly basis.

Media Questionnaire Analysis






                 Media Questionnaire Analysis

1   1.      The first question of the questionnaire was ‘Do you read the current magazine?’ 90% of the class said no, they do not read the current magazine. This proves that the product is not reaching its target audience.

2  2.      The second question was ‘What colours should be included in the magazine?’ The most popular colours we got in return were Red, Back, Blue and White.  These colours we’re probably chosen because they’re easy on the eye.

3  3.      The third question asked in the questionnaire was ‘What image do they want on the front cover?’ Overall 80% said they would like either students work or students themselves to be the main image on the front cover.

4  4.      The fourth question was saying ‘How much would you pay for the magazine?’ The most common response was that 75% said that they would pay between 50p and £1.

5  5.      The fifth question was saying about ‘How often should the magazine be published?’ The most general response was that it should be published either every week, or every fortnight. 70% of people made this response.

6  6.      The sixth question was ‘What do you want to be in the magazine?’ The most answers to this question was saying that it should include the following: College Events, Technology, Gig Guides, Job Vacancies or Subject Information.

7  7.      The seventh question was ‘What should the magazine be called?’ The feedback we got for this was either: East Norfolk Life, EN News, College News, College Magazine or THE EN READ.

8  8.      The eight question was asking ‘Would freebies encourage you to buy the magazine?’ 85% of people replied yes.

9  9.      And finally the ninth and last question was ‘Would you like there to be an online version? 50% SAID YES AND 50% SAID NO.

College Magazine Cover Analysis

College Magazines are helpful for students at the college for news and updates. This is my analysis of one.
The masthead in this college magazine is a bright and bold and easy to see. This appeals to the audience so that when they see the magazine they will automatically know what magazine it is.
The magazine ‘College’ have used no smaller images which makes the audience focus on the striking image of the student holding his work books.
The cover lines used on the cover of the magazine are based on the campus at the College and other college based features. The features are also partially about technology (Blackberry) so this would appeal to the students at the college.
They have only used 3 colours with the font. These colours are lime, grey and white. Using these colours are efficient because they because they are easy to read and it keeps the magazine looking tidy and not over complicated.

The font used is sans serif and looks quite modern. This makes it applicable for the teenage/young adult audience because they are also modern. It is also big and clear to read so the audience can straight away                                                                                   see the masthead and the cover stories.

Feature Article Analysis


In this NME feature article, the title is ‘Drake’s Progress’. It is very bold and easy to see, and also easily tells the audience who the article is about. It includes a kicker which tells the audience more information about his life and what he’s talked about. They have used big, bold text for the pull quote. This quote is used to make the audience look at it and want to read on. If the pull quote is boring and not understandable, then the audience may not want to carry on reading. That’s why a good, interesting pull quote is vital. They have used a drop cap for effect. They have used two gutters to break up the texts into columns. This allows the audience to not just look down one column of text. Having to do that could get boring for the reader because it makes the texts look longer which to much content. The main body text (main article itself) is laid out well and is easy to read and take in. They’ve only used two colours for the texts so this makes it simple yet effective. 




In this feature article, the title is ‘The Vaccines’ which is also the name of the band. The font is black with a white background so it is easy to read for the audience. Underneath the title, the magazine has included a kicker. This is useful for the audience because it’s basically more information of the article and what it’s about. One of the members of the group ‘Justin Young’ made a quote in the article which was chosen by the magazine to be a pull quote. (“We are a pop band and we want to be a pop band”). They have used a drop cap for the beginning of their paragraphs to show clearly to the audience when a new paragraph has been performed. They have used one gutter to separate the two columns of writing. This makes it easier for the audience as reading one column of lots of text can be difficult and repetitive.  The colour palette used is mainly black and blue. Using only two colours makes it simpler for the audience when reading the article and it’s not too confusing. The main body of the article is laid out well as it’s not all in one big clump of text and it’s spaced out well. 


Contents Page Analysis

In most contents pages, the magazines include a smaller version of the masthead. In this case, ‘NME’ have included a smaller version of their masthead next to ‘THIS WEEK’.
The colours NME have used is made up of mostly red, white, black and some occasional gold. These colours are identical to the colours they use on the front covers of their magazines.
NME have used a number of sub headings such as ‘News, Radar, Review, LIVE! And Features.
They have used the words ‘Contents’ and not ‘Contents Page’ on the contents page.

NME have used a main image in their contents page, by filling most of the page up with a picture of Kasabian. They have also used other smaller images but these are both of their front cover, just smaller.
They have also used a dropcap for effect.

In most contents pages, the magazines will often include an image of the masthead, just smaller, In this incident, ‘Q’ have included this next to ‘contents’ and next to ‘Review’.
The colours Q have used is made up of mostly red, white, black and some occasional gold. These colours are identical to the colours they use on the front covers of their magazines.
In this contents page, Q haven’t included any sort of offers directly to their audience. They have included the web address for the magazine, so there may be special offers on that.
Q have used a number of subheadings to support their contents page. They have used for example, ‘Features, Oasis Special, Every Month and Review’.
They have used the words ‘Contents’ and not ‘Contents Page’ on the contents page.
Q have used a dominating image, by inserting a large image of ‘The Courteeners’. They have used a supporting image of ‘Nick Cave’.
They haven’t used a thumbnail of the front cover which you sometimes see in music magazines contents pages.

Front Cover Magazine Analysis

The target audience for this magazine would be fans of the music genre ‘Rock’ and fans of the artists that are featured, Green Day or Billie Joe Armstrong in particular. The audience (Rock or Green Day/Billie Joe Armstrong fans) would the see image of him and be lured by the magazine as he is in one of the most successful and popular rock bands in the world and fans of the rock star would want to know the latest news on him or his band In the magazine cover, there are 4 smaller images that have been used. 3 of the images haven been used to advertise the ‘awesome posters’ that are in the magazine. The other image is of rock star ‘Dio’ who passed away, so his image is on there for a tribute.
The cover lines used are about all different rock bands that are featured in the magazine. Bands such as ‘Bullet for my valentine’ and ‘The king blues’.  In the editing of this magazine, Kerrang have used 4/5 different colours. They have used White, Blue, Yellow and Black. The use of black signifies that it’s a rock magazine as the colour black is related to rock music. The white and yellow is used to stand out against the black background.
They have kept to the same font pretty much throughout the whole cover which keeps it looking tidy for the target audience.




The target audience for this magazine would be fans of the music genre ‘Rap’ and fans of the rappers that are featured in the magazine, Eminem in particular. The audience (Eminem or rap fans) would see the image of him and be lured by the magazine as he is one of the most popular and successful rappers of all time and fans of his would want to know the latest news on him. In the Magazine cover, there are no smaller images included. This means that ‘VIBE Magazine’ wanted to make Eminem the stand out image on the cover.The masthead ‘VIBE’ is actually partially cover by Eminem’s head. This is only acceptable for the more well-known magazines because their target audience already know what they’re looking for in terms of the masthead and the name of the magazine.
The cover lines are partly about Eminem and what is to feature in the magazine, but mostly inclusions of other famous, familiar rappers or things such as ‘Who is the best rapper?’ and ‘50 hottest rap blogs’.
In the editing of this magazine cover, VIBE have only used 3/4 colours which keeps the look of the cover neat and tidy. They’ve mostly used Grey, Black and Red which signify that the magazine is a rap genre, as these colours are quite brutal, deep and dangerous colours.

They have kept to the same font pretty much throughout the whole cover which keeps it looking tidy for the target audience.
