Due to the style and target audience of the magazine I have produced, I think that Bauer would be a very sensible publisher to join with. Although this publisher already has many music magazines including the big names of Q and Kerrang, I feel that choosing this publishers would be sensible as they have no stand out Rap based magazine (with Q and Kerrang both being Rock genre). Because Bauer is such a well-known, successful publishers, and there are many Rap fans in America, I think that although the demographic isn’t huge, the demographic that there is would all be intrigued by the magazine. Bauer are also very likely to get “States of Play” sold in very popular American distributors such as Walmart. Bauer would also be able to provide very high-profile advertising contracts with the magazine, Bauer have lots of experience in this department and would be able to get the best revenue out of the companies who want to be featured in the magazine.
States of Play is developed to cater to a very wide and popular target audience; Bauer has the skill to stretch and reach the audience that my magazine has the ability to appeal to. At the moment, they already publish very successful music-genre magazines and have formed a large trust gain with the readers for a good quality magazine. If I were to go and join a very minor magazine publisher, although I would have more control of the magazine, I would get nowhere near as much income from sales. I think the idea of an experience publisher being in control of my magazine is a good idea as they’d know what’s best for the magazine and how to sell the most copies. The Bauer connection would give the magazine maximum exposure to the audience, this is critical because many titles fail within their first 3 years. Going with a small publisher simply wouldn’t fulfil the potential of the magazine.
Finally, with the quick expansion of online media, social media and technologies, my magazine would be able to reach a much younger demographic. This could be achieved by a website, YouTube channel, applications, Twitter/Facebook/Instagram accounts etc. This online presence will help improve the name of the magazine and make it a wanted magazine for Rappers/Rap fans all over the world.
